CHAPTER 38

CADE

On the drive home, Knock told me all about how he and Jeri had caught Dylan trying to scare Marissa. I didn't really know the girl, but I knew of her. I was pretty sure most of us who hung out in the gamer circles did, and the idea of Marissa being scared? It didn't sit right with me.

Worse, Dylan had tried to push back against Jeri. The asshole had been willing to go after my boyfriend and my girlfriend. Right now, he was probably sitting with his little Alpha Team friends, trying to find some way to fuck us over without getting their videos released.

None of it sat right with me. Sure, I was starting to get used to the idea that my significant others could take care of themselves, but that didn't mean I had to like it. I wanted to beat the shit out of Dylan just on principle, and this was one more reason to add to my very long list.

And yet, none of that helped with our chores. So, once we made it home, Knock and I hurried inside to put our shit away, changed, kissed a few times, and then headed to the barn. Kitty was paying me to be a full-time stall cleaner for Andrews Shires, so I had to keep up my end of this sweet bargain. Cleaning the stalls was also relaxing. It was the sort of thing that let me work out my anger and frustration without making things worse.

"So," Knock said out of the blue, "I was thinking about maybe taking Jeri on a date again."

"Too much guy time, huh?" I asked, glancing over.

He looked up, smiled, and then headed for another pile of shit. "Too little girl time, if I'm honest," he said. "I want all the guy time and all the girl time."

"I'm good with that," I assured him. "I kinda feel like we've been ignoring her. From the sounds of it, Ripper and Hot are just sliding in to steal the show."

Which made Knock laugh. "Yeah. Ripper. Fucker deserves her, though."

"Yeah, he does," I agreed. "Zoe says he's in love with her."

Knock just nodded. "I can see that."

I grunted, knowing when someone was avoiding something when I heard it. I also was the kind of guy to push. "What about you?"

"With Jeri?" he asked as he made his way to the waiting wheel barrow.

"With anyone," I said, trying hard - and failing - to be subtle.

Knock paused at the open stall door to lean his shoulder against it. "I'm living with my boyfriend, chasing down a group of serial sexual abusers, and pretty much fucking it up with the girl. I think that's called fucked up."

"Not what I was asking and you know it," I pointed out.

So he jerked his chin at me. "What about you?"

"I'm getting a bad case of feelings," I said, scanning the floor all of a sudden in the hopes of more horse shit. "I like this polycule thing."

"Yeah, that about sums up how I'm feeling too," Knock said, pointing at the floor.
